Research & Curriculum Development

PTM Consulting Group has extensive experience in developing curriculum, curriculum guides, higher education syllabi, and toolkits, as well as teaching and offering on-line and in-person courses.  Each of these services is explained below:

Curriculum Development

PTM staff have extensive experience in developing curriculum.  This ranges from adding a new unit to an existing course to complex, high level course development with resources and assessment materials.  PTM has done this work for apprenticeship schools, vocational schools and colleges.  We work with teachers and subject matter experts to ensure that the curriculum will meet the desired outcomes.

Syllabus Development

PTM has developed college acceptable syllabi from apprenticeship course materials.  This has proved to be especially helpful when developing partnerships with two- and four-year colleges – sometimes resulting in up to double the number of credits that had been awarded for apprenticeships in the past.

Toolkits

PTM has developed toolkits in the following areas: Grant Writing, Pre-Apprenticeship Development, DEI and Apprenticeship Administration, and Leadership.  These toolkits include step-by-step guides, as well as resources and templates.

Toolbox Safety Talks

PTM has and can develop aids and materials to offer safety talks on construction sites.  These aids can include physical materials, cell phone videos and links to online resources.

Labor History

The building and construction industry today faces strong headwinds associated with recruitment and the large number of active craft workers who will soon retire. With fewer and fewer new members coming from union households, much of the history and traditions of the crafts are not being passed down through families. Today, there is a lack of knowledge about how craft organizations developed and the important roles that they played in improving the lives of members and their families, overcoming challenges, creating a better society, and improving the construction industry in the United States and Canada.

PTM has the expertise to help organizations develop their histories and accomplishments so that new and future generations will fully understand how their organizations evolved over time and the important contributions that previous generations made to move the organization forward.

PTM can perform detailed research on your organization’s history, develop training materials to educate members about this history, organize train-the-trainer workshops for your local coordinators and instructors, teach craft history classes at the international, regional, or local level, and create supplemental educational materials, such as digital archives, books, oral histories, toolkits, or other products to help you properly pass on your history to future generations or workers. PTM is your one-stop partner to help grow the knowledge and appreciation of your organization’s unique and essential history.

Labor Studies

PTM can provide a labor studies class which is an overview of all activities of unions, from collective bargaining to grievances to organizing membership retention.

Contract Negotiations

PTM has developed a collective bargaining class that is currently being used by a community college that has a partnership with a number of building trades apprenticeship and training programs. This class can be modified for other colleges and organizations or for use by apprenticeship schools.

Arbitration

PTM staff have designed and delivered arbitration classes for several organizations.  These classes have proved to be especially helpful for groups, so that they can  follow the process even when they have retained the services of an attorney.

General Education Classes

PTM has developed a curriculum that infuses General Studies curriculum into apprenticeship classes including English Composition, Public Speaking, Computers, Humanities, and Social Sciences.  This curriculum is available to accredited schools who are seeking degree granting status as well as apprenticeship programs interested in accreditation or partnering with a local college.
